Backlinks for a new website: the first 25, in order

A new domain has no authority, no network and no content worth citing yet. The playbook below is the one we ran for our own products, ordered by effort against payoff and it gets a new site its first 25 real links without buying any of them.

Phase one: the links that only require showing up

Directories and launch platforms. Not the 200-item spam lists, the verified minority with real authority and dofollow links. Sequenced properly this is 15 to 25 dofollow links from DR 60 to 90 domains in the first month:

Phase two: pages built to be cited

Links come to pages worth pointing at and two shapes earn citations disproportionately:

  1. Comparison and alternatives pages. Writers assembling roundups link to honest head-to-heads because it saves them work.
  2. Small free tools. A single-purpose checker or calculator in your niche earns links for years because people share tools, not posts.

Phase three: outreach with a reason

Cold outreach fails when it asks for a favor. It works when it names a gap: find the roundups and listicles in your category that already rank, note the competitors listed on each and write to the ones you are missing from. The pitch is one line: your list covers X and Y and not us, here is what we do differently. The author's incentive is a complete list and you are helping them have one.

Keep score honestly: a link exists when it is live and dofollow on a page you can open, not when a submission email says thanks. Half the value of this playbook is the verification habit.
